If you can see a cable hanging loose from your garage door, or the door is sitting crooked and low on one side, you've got a broken cable. Here's what it means and what to do.
What Are Garage Door Cables?
Garage door cables are steel wire ropes that connect the bottom corner of the door to the spring system. They work in tandem with the springs to lift and lower the door smoothly. Without working cables, the door can't operate safely.
Why Do Cables Break?
Worn Springs
This is the most common cause. When a spring breaks, the remaining tension transfers to the cable — which isn't designed to handle that load. The cable frays and snaps. If you have a broken cable, have the technician check your springs too.
Normal Wear
Steel cables fray over thousands of cycles. After 7–10 years, the individual strands start breaking until the cable fails completely.
Rust and Corrosion
Long Island's coastal air accelerates corrosion. Cables that aren't periodically lubricated rust from the inside out and fail earlier than they should.
Improper Installation
If the cable slips off the drum (the spool at the top of the door), it creates uneven tension that causes rapid fraying.
⚠️ Don't use a garage door with a broken cable. The door can fall suddenly and cause serious injury or damage your car.
Signs Your Cable Is Failing
- One side of the door is lower than the other
- You can see fraying or broken strands on the cable
- The cable has come off the drum (visible slack)
- The door moves unevenly or makes a rubbing sound
- The door fell suddenly or slammed shut
What Does Cable Repair Cost on Long Island?
| Service | Price Range |
|---|---|
| Single cable replacement | $100 – $175 |
| Both cables replaced | $150 – $250 |
| Cable + spring combo | $250 – $450 |
| Cable drum replacement | $175 – $300 |
💡 Like springs, replace both cables at the same time. If one snapped, the other is under the same wear and will fail soon.
Can I Replace Garage Door Cables Myself?
Cable replacement requires releasing spring tension, which is dangerous without proper training. While cables themselves are inexpensive ($10–$30 per cable), the labor involves working under tension that can cause serious injury. We recommend professional replacement.
How Long Does Cable Repair Take?
A technician can replace both cables in 1–2 hours. At Garavex, we carry standard cables for all door sizes in our trucks — same-day repair is almost always possible.
