Frequently Asked Questions
Belt drive vs. chain drive — what should I pick?
For 90% of homeowners, belt-drive. They’re nearly silent (critical if there’s a bedroom over the garage), require almost zero maintenance, and last 15+ years. Chain drive is only worth it if you have an oversized commercial-style door or are on a tight budget.
Do I really need battery backup?
In California it’s legally required on every new opener. Everywhere else it’s optional but smart — if the power goes out while your car is in the garage, a backup battery means you’re not climbing on a step ladder to pull the emergency release in the dark.
Can you make my old opener smart without replacing it?
Often yes. We install MyQ smart-home retrofits on most LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and Craftsman openers from the last 15 years. If you have an older opener without safety sensors, replacement is usually a better investment.
