What Garage Door Rollers Do
Garage door rollers are the small wheels attached to the edges of each door panel. They ride inside the vertical and horizontal tracks as the door opens and closes. There are typically 10–12 rollers on a standard two-car garage door. When they wear out, everything gets louder, rougher, and harder on the rest of the door system.
Steel Rollers vs. Nylon Rollers
Standard Steel Rollers
Steel rollers are the original equipment on most garage doors. They're durable and inexpensive. The downside: steel-on-steel contact with the track creates a grinding, rumbling noise — especially noticeable in attached garages where the sound transmits into the living space. Steel rollers also eventually score (scratch) the inside of the tracks.
Nylon Rollers with Sealed Bearings
Nylon rollers have a ball-bearing core surrounded by a nylon wheel. They run nearly silently, don't damage the tracks, and last 2–3 times longer than steel rollers. For any Long Island homeowner with an attached garage — where the door is adjacent to a bedroom, kitchen, or living room — nylon rollers are the clear upgrade. The price difference is modest: usually $30–$50 more for a full set.
Signs You Need New Rollers
- Loud grinding or rumbling noise during operation
- Door shakes or vibrates as it moves
- Rollers have visible cracks, flat spots, or chips
- The door moves in jerky increments instead of smoothly
- Rollers are off-center or visibly wobbling in the track
- Significant rust on steel roller stems
