Broken Garage Door Spring Repair in Queens & Long Island

A loud bang and a door that won’t lift usually means a broken spring. Garavex replaces torsion and extension springs and re-balances the door — with a clear estimate first. Spring replacement is one of our most common same-day repairs when scheduling allows.

Signs of a broken garage door spring

Springs are the hardest-working part of a garage door, and they fail in recognizable ways. You likely have a broken spring if you notice:

A loud bang from the garage

When a torsion spring snaps it releases its stored tension all at once — often a startling “gunshot” sound, sometimes heard overnight.

The door won’t lift — or only a few inches

The opener strains, the door barely moves, then stops. The opener is hitting a door that suddenly weighs its full dead weight.

A visible gap in the spring

Look at the spring on the shaft above the door. A two-inch gap where the coil separated is a clear sign it has broken.

The door is crooked or slams down

With an extension spring broken on one side, the door hangs unevenly; a door that drops fast when lowered has lost its counterbalance.

Why a broken spring makes the door so heavy

This is the single most important thing to understand: the springs lift the door, not the opener. A residential garage door weighs anywhere from roughly 100 to well over 300 pounds. The spring system stores energy when the door closes and releases it to counterbalance that weight when the door opens, so the opener (or your arm) only has to manage a few pounds of difference. When a spring breaks, that counterbalance disappears and the full weight lands on whatever tries to move the door. That’s why a door that worked perfectly yesterday can feel impossible to lift today — and why forcing the opener to do the spring’s job damages the motor and the door.

Torsion vs. extension springs

Garavex services both spring systems found on residential doors:

Torsion springsExtension springs
Mounted on a shaft above the door openingMounted along the horizontal tracks on each side
Wind up and store torque to lift the doorStretch and contract to counterbalance the door
Smoother, better-balanced, longer typical lifeCommon on older and lighter doors
Usually one or two springs on the shaftAlways a pair, one per side, with safety cables

Both store a large amount of energy and both are dangerous to service without the right tools and training. Extension-spring doors should always have containment safety cables running through them — if yours doesn’t, we’ll flag it.

One spring or two?

Many doors use two springs; some use one. When a door has two springs, they wear at nearly the same rate because they do the same work over the same number of cycles. So when one breaks, the second is usually close behind. Replacing both at the same time is common practice — it avoids a second breakdown and a second trip within weeks, and it keeps the door balanced. On a single-spring door, we’ll discuss whether a matched upgrade makes sense for your door’s weight and use. We explain the choice; you decide.

What happens during spring replacement

Measure & match

We measure wire size, length and inside diameter to match the correct spring for your door’s weight.

Safe tension release

Remaining spring tension is released with proper winding bars before any part is removed.

Replace & balance

New spring(s) installed, wound to spec, and the door balanced so it holds at mid-travel.

Test the system

We re-connect the opener, check cables and rollers, and verify safe, smooth operation.

What affects the cost of spring repair

Every door is different, so we give you an exact price after we see it — but these are the factors that move the number, so there are no surprises:

  • Spring type and size — torsion vs. extension, wire gauge, and length sized to your door’s weight.
  • One spring or two — replacing a matched pair vs. a single spring.
  • Door weight and size — single-car doors differ from heavy insulated double-car doors.
  • Related wear — worn cables, rollers or bearings discovered during the repair, which we’ll point out and quote before doing.

We don’t publish a flat price online because quoting a spring without knowing the door would be guessing. What we promise is the price in writing before you approve the work.

Spring safety — please don’t DIY this one

Torsion and extension springs store enough energy to cause severe injury. Spring replacement requires proper winding bars, correctly sized parts, and training. If a spring is broken, stop using the door and keep people clear until it’s repaired. Call (855) 634-5995.

Spring repair FAQs

Why is my garage door suddenly too heavy to lift?

The springs carry the weight of the door, not the opener. When a spring breaks, that counterbalance is gone and the door’s full weight drops onto the opener or your arms. A suddenly heavy door almost always means a broken spring.

Should I use the opener if a spring is broken?

No. The opener isn’t designed to lift the full weight of the door. Running it with a broken spring can burn out the motor, bend the door, or snap a cable. Stop and call for repair.

If one spring broke, should I replace both?

On a two-spring door, springs wear at the same rate, so when one breaks the other is usually near the end of its life. Replacing both avoids a second failure and keeps the door balanced. We’ll explain the options for your door.

Can you replace a spring the same day?

Spring replacement is one of our most common same-day repairs when scheduling allows. Call early with your ZIP code and the door size so we can confirm availability.
